A Key to the Armoire - A Personal Style Blog by Susana Fernandez

Oh, Christmas tree, how hopeful are your branches! This has not been an easy year, so decorating was a beautiful way to give thanks for being healthy and safe. For this year’s theme, I wanted to capture the magical feeling that we all felt when we were children by making our decorations exhuberant, colorful, and very luxurious!

The anchoring colors were red and gold, but with flashes of green, blue, silver. I summoned every Christmas elf and fairy in the attic to help us decorate the tree and cheer our home so, although there are no visitors this year, these magical beings are keeping our Christmas spirit alive!

We have been collecting Christmas decorations and ornaments for the past 25 years, and this year, I decided to bring EVERY. SINGLE. THING. WE. OWN. down from the attic to re-organize, so for about two weeks, the house was a Christmas War Zone! The fun thing was that we were able to pick and choose what we wanted to use this year. We wanted a magical, but luxurious decor, so among the many boxes of ornaments, we decided to decorate our tabletop tree with glass-blown, hand-decorated, Venetian ornaments and mercury glass garlands. We also added vintage Spode candles to give the tree that old-fashioned Victorian look. This was particularly appropriate since it is a tabletop tree, which was the traditional style used in the Victorian era. In case you wonder, our tree is a 4.5 ft Vermont White Spruce from Balsam Hill. It comes with clear lights, but we always add more twinkling and musical lights, some of which are almost 40 years old!

At the base of the table, I placed a Christmas vignette in a box, which included a vintage Father Christmas, a porcelain angel topper, a mischievous Christmas fairy, and a very helpful elf. Elves were quite helpful this Christmas, and as you can see, three of them helped us to hang ornaments on the tree too!

To finish the Christmas ambiance, I added our Christmas village from Department 56 underneath the tree. This bustling Main Street has busy sidewalks and carriage traffic. Lots of people are caroling or buying last minute presents! It’s quite whimsical, and I can stay hours upon hours imagining stories about its inhabitants!

Lastly, we have our treasured Mackenzie-Childs Father Christmas and Mark Roberts fairies keeping us company and making sure we’re all behaving!

I hope you enjoyed this look into our cozy living room! Merry Christmas to all, and to all a prosperous New Year!
