A Key to the Armoire - A Personal Style Blog by Susana Fernandez

Are you familiar with the Brambly Hedge children stories by Jill Barklem? They are the cutest thing, particularly their intricate and hyper-detailed drawings, which depict the very interesting lives of a group of very proper, and quite British, mice! I absolutely adore them!

I began collecting these plates years and years ago. My collection started with the bread plates, and little by little, I have been adding pieces. In fact, if you look carefully, you will see that for Easter, the tea cups are white, but we got to enjoy the table for a bit longer, and in the meantime, I added the Brambly Hedge tea cups to my collection, which is why I also took pictures with them once they arrived!

These Brambly Hedge plates are by the famous British pottery, Royal Doulton, and since they are highly-coveted collector pieces, they tend to be hard to find, particularly in the USA! Anyway, the scenes of the plates are so adorable and whimsical that they were perfect for Easter. After all, mice, birds, and bunnies all live peacefully together in the countryside.

The pastel colors of the plates also worked well with the colors of Easter, as they could with Mother’s Day too. I figured that the table may give you some inspiration to celebrate this coming Sunday.

Now, let me tell you a bit about the table itself…

Once again, I used my Oleg Cassini crystal cake stand to raise the centerpiece of moss rabbits from Homegoods. I also tucked-in some artichokes, and filled antique Chinese carved soapstone grape leaf dishes with chocolate pearls. The doily you see is also vintage, and is Romanian lace, which reminded me of a straw basket. The two stone-like ceramic garden urns were topped with glass nappy dishes filled with eggs and flowers.

For the place setting itself, I relied on my versatile Spode Delamere dinner plates as a base, and accompanied them with Grace’s Teaware simple white tea cups (before receiving the other ones!) The Venetian glass tumblers are a very rare Carlo Moretti pattern called Rigadin, and the mother-of-pearl handled Edwardian flatware is by 1847 Rogers Brothers. I set it over vintage Hedwin placemats and linen napkins.

Because this table was set for a brunch, the set up is appropriate for breakfast, and no breakfast (or brunch!) is complete without butter, for which I used individual butter domes, which are the best way to keep the butter soft and spreadable.

Finally, I flanked the center with antique Baldwin Brass candlesticks and antique cased glass shades, which gave a soft glow. To add whimsy to this table, I used the sweetest, little birdies as companions to the place cards I penned.

As you will probably relate, this was a very unusual Easter (as it will also be Mother’s Day), but we had much to be thankful for, being healthy and safe as we are! I hope you enjoy this table as much as I enjoyed setting it!
